The article presents the social-political background – from the reunification of Germany to the present day – on which the spectacular success of The Left (Die Linke) is based. According to the author, the emergence of The Left in Germany shows that similar developments would also be desirable in Hungary – as well as in other countries of Europe – even if, in the given political situation, its role would be limited to being only "a moderating force".

Following the example of The Left (Die Linke), the anti-capitalist political current in the French Socialist Party quit the party in November 2008 and has begun to organize a new Parti de Gauche (Left Party). Based on the political-organisational developments of recent years, the author examines opportunities for the unification of the forces of the radical political left in France.
