Everything is identical to its own history – why should history itself be an exemption? This paraphrase of Hegel can also be applied to Marxist history writing- shows the author. The once well known quote from Marx, "the philosophers have only interpreted the world, in various ways: the point, however, is to change it" is still valid but its validity is not self-explaining. The world has changed as well as its understanding, especially the understanding of changes, so "understanding" is also questioned, which might become a cliché together with the conclusion that changing the world is an illusion.
