Conversation with Immanuel Wallerstein about the collapse of the left wing in Eastern Europe
According to Wallerstein, since their beginning in the 19th century, the social democratic, communist and national liberation movements have chosen the concept of seizing power; this is what has failed in our century and caused disappointment to the followers of these movements. He sees a link between the East European turn and the shaking of the US's world power position. He once again expounds his theory about the development of the large regions of interest (Pacific zone and United Europe). He states however, that capitalism is coming close to the end of its possibilities, and the major unsolved problems include the lagging behind by the third world which is accompanied by population explosion, the already started decline of the middle classes and a decrease in security.
Military-industrial complexes against disarmement
The article taken over from the French periodical M, starts out from the known role of the military-industrial complexes in the world's life and examines how these organisations reacted to the crisis of trade of their products. These reactions are in line with the general trends of capital: the emergence of national capital centres in the third world, European integration. The author refers to the unfavourable effects of the military industry in the capitalist economy itself, and urging a transition to a peace economy, he states that the ultimate solution is rejection of the capitalist idea and together with it, the war culture; exclusion of the principle of violence from the attitude of the socialist movements as well.
On the socio-ecological survival of ethnic minorities – especially Hungarians in the Carpathian-basin
Discussing the conditions of the survival of ethnic minorities, the author underlines remaining of their communities in one bloc as a basic precondition of preserving identity.
The unknown capitalism
The domestic public consciousness can be characterised with such measure of idealisation of capitalism, which can hardly be found even in the conservative circles of the Anglo-Saxon world. Eventually this is a continuation of the wrong traditions of Stalinist formation of public opinion: the criticism of one existing society is based on the apology of another existing system. The ground for manipulation that threatens the future of the society is given by the lack of knowledge, what can be decreased by studying also a significant part of the progressive western economic, sociological and politological literature.
