Many believe, especially in the militant anti-fascist movement, that the result achieved by Jean-Marie Le Pen in the 2002 Spring elections marks the revival of fascism. This is wrong. We are facing an atypical and historically unprecedented right, which has replaced the cult of the state by ultra-liberalism, corporatism by market reactions, and sometimes even nationalism is replaced by regional or purely local particularism.

In the second half of the 1990s, the region experienced a rise of far right political forces. Their message is fed by historic legacies, the failure of the transition as well as anti-globalist attitudes.
