The origins of the spirit of the olympics can be found at the end of the 19th century. The author explains why the sponsor of the games have become even more committed to the olympics despite the scandals that have surrounded it in the recent period.

230 million dollars have been spent to advertise the 2000 Olympic games with the slogan celebrate humanity. Such campaigns, however, cannot make people belive that the games stand above politics and business, and should be seen as a global family gathering.

The author compares the positive and negative utopias of globalisation and the information society. In our real world, the freedom of capital movements stimulates a devaluation of labour everywhere, no matter which scenario we favour in principle.
