The system change has dramatically transformed cinema and film culture in Eastern Europe. The number of films produced dropped, and in these new characters symbolise the new era. The number of movie theatres has alsó decreased, there is however a much greater space for the imported, predominantly American mass movies. Social development and higher education
Inequalities emerging in the sphere of education, and particuarly higher education, illustrate strikingly the dramatic changes that have taken place within the structure of Hungarian society. Recent reform initiatives do not improve but if possible deteriorate the situation of those excluded from quality and higher education. (The article is a written version of a lecture at College for Social Theory, April 1997.)

We introduce the outstanding but fairly controversial figure of Soviet and Russian film art, Nikita Mihalkov, director of the award winning Burnt by the Sun. The career described here show affection with socialism, nationalism and monarchism in various periods of history.
